Like good health and youth, most of us take a thick head of hair for granted, that is, until it is gone. For many people, hair transplant procedures will help bring back the appearance of a full, or at least a vastly improved, head of hair.
What is a Hair Transplant?
Used in the Unites States since the 1950s, hair transplantation is a surgery that involves removing hair from back of the scalp and transplanting it to fill an area with no hair. The hairs on the back and sides of the scalp are resistant to the actions of the hormones responsible for hair loss, so they do not fall off.
In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to the bald scalp. Most hair transplants are performed in doctor's office under local anesthesia.
It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. It can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants.
Since the hair naturally grows in groupings of 1 to 4 hairs, today’s most advanced techniques harvest and transplant these naturally occurring 1–4 hair "follicular units" in their natural groupings. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair. This hair transplant procedure is called Follicular unit transplantation.
Donor hair can be harvested in two different ways: strip harvesting, and follicular unit extraction (FUE).
At our clinic we perform both strip method and FUE method.
Hair Transplantation surgery has become very popular in recent years, partly driven by improvements in outcomes and partly because of increased awareness about the safety of the surgery.
There are a lot of options available for the consumer looking for hair transplantation surgery. Though this might sound like a win-win scenario, we are getting to see a lot of very poorly planned surgeries and also poor outcomes.
Hair transplant surgery is a very surgeon dependent surgery and it is of paramount importance to pick the right surgeon. It is also a unique surgery because we have to deal with a very limited number of hair follicles to give an illusion of more hair.
FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. In this process hair follicles are extracted from the back of the scalp in individally from permanent zone. It has got numerous advantages over FUT.
There are a lot of misconceptions about FUE. This stems from lack of understanding of the concepts involved in FUE.
